It is time to learn all about vetiver. Vetiver is an essential oil that has a very deep smell (described as “nutty”) and it incredibly relaxing and grounding. In fact, it is called the “oil of tranquility.” It is my #1 concentration oil, and when you delve into the background, there’s no question why.
Vetiver is a tall, tufted grass that was often used in building houses in Calcutta and Haiti (awnings, thatching, blinds, sunshades). The oil is steam distilled from the roots of the plant, though the grasses that were used in these houses presented a wonderful fragrance that created a calming and safe environment. It is also often planted to prevent soil erosion and for ground conservation, as it has deep roots and is highly drought-tolerant.
Because of its deep, earthy smell, Vetiver is often used as a base note in fragrances, soaps, and toiletries. It is often used to calm and soothe the mind, dispel anger and upset, minimize occasional irrational thoughts, and also reduce tension and stress. It can also help the physical body by helping feel restored and rested. Because of the uses for both the physical and mental body, it is a very appropriate oil to use in lotions, massage oils, and aromatically.
It is incredibly high in sesquiterpenes (Vetiver is one of the oils that has the highest amount), which allow it to cross the blood-brain barrier. Basically in laymen terms, this means that oils with sesquiterpenes can penetrate the liquid that surrounds the brain. That liquid (cerebrospinal fluid) protects it from inorganic matter crossing into the brain. But the tiny molecules of essential oils can penetrate that fluid and work into the brain. They can also help to reprogram the cells so that if they are off-course, they can be corrected to do what they were meant to do.
Vetiver also has an incredibly high ORAC value (74,300 µTE/100g whereas kale is 1,770), so it is a wonderful antioxidant. Because of the sesquiterpenes and the ability to reset the cells, Vetiver also makes a great skin rejuvenator and anti-aging tool.
Researchers regularly study the way that stress can lead to problems in the bedroom too. So less stress and more sleep (which Vetiver can do) can mean more libido. It can also lead to a more whole-body health as sleep and stress can influence just about every body system (brain, heart, digestion, immune system, etc.).
I first started using Vetiver by accident. I have an essential oil collection, thanks to getting enrolled in Essential Rewards in 2014 (I try to add 1 new oil to my collection with each month’s order). So when I had a team member ask if I could send them a sample of Vetiver, Cedarwood, and Lavender, I happily made a small vial. But it was the first time that I used Vetiver, and I didn’t realize how sticky and thick it was. I ended up with a little on my hands, so instead of washing it off (never waste an oil), I rubbed it on my neck, temples, and face.
Well, it was nap time, so I was in my office. And I decided it was time to clean. And I cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. By the time I was done, my entire office was completely organized and I had a huge pile of items and papers to toss.
We have also found that a roller bottle of Vetiver and V6 is perfect to add to my son first thing in the mornings (and often a reapplication mid-day) while he is happy to help him stay in his good, sweet mood throughout the struggles of Life as a Three-Year-Old.
How It Works
You see, what Vetiver does for me is that it helps me focus on the task that I want to accomplish. I tend to multi-task, and although I’m good at it, sometimes I can jump around too much. So when I am able to really focus on one thing at a time, I can accomplish so much more and feel good about the work that I’ve done.
But there’s also the relaxation piece of it. How can something that helps you concentrate on work also help you sleep? Easy! When we have trouble sleeping, it’s often because we can’t turn off our brain. Just witness my three-year-old daughter when she doesn’t want to go to sleep to see this in practice – singing, balancing her baby dolls on her feet, asking to go to the bathroom 14 times in a 2 minute period… So if we can harness that focus, it allows us to concentrate on the one thing that we are trying to do: relaxation and sleep. The other little things aren’t as pressing and it allows us to drift off.
